Security of
Migrant Workers
Inter-state migrant workers face significant challenges in accessing their rights and entitlements, often lacking social security while working in the informal sector. This affects their ability to meet basic needs and provides minimal support for their children’s development. We support national efforts to assist these workers, impacting over 30,000 individuals annually through eight centers. Our approach leverages existing government infrastructure to enhance access to social security schemes, collaborating with workers, families, community organizations, and government entities.
How we Work
We operate worker facilitation centers in migrant-heavy urban areas, assisting with identity documents, bank accounts, and government registrations. Our team follows up to help workers access benefits. These centers foster community through conversations among migrants and locals, and we partner with social organizations and government agencies to strengthen our initiatives.
We promote community engagementwith government and social agencies for sustainable public infrastructure access in five years. The One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) Scheme is community-managed with support from volunteers at three centers. Regular follow-ups and workshops on financial and legal literacy ensure active participation.
Over the past decade, we've learned that people aren't naturally opposed; outdated practices have led to stagnation. To achieve a fair balance, all system elements must work together. This includes creating collectives with workers, local administration, industry, and skill agencies to develop mutually beneficial solutions.
Migration is now a key focus in development, especially after COVID. We build on existing research in India pioneered by various national and international organisations and critique new government policies to enhance understanding of migrant workers' lives. Our research cell provides reliable data and insights to inform decision-makers and influence stakeholders.

An independent Impact Assessment study is scheduled for September 2024, despite quarterly assessments under the Monitoring and Evaluation Framework. This study will evaluate parameters such as asset building for earnings, utilization of social security schemes, government engagement, use of ESI facilities for health, resolution of legal cases, and support for community members in accessing rights and entitlements.
